Mata Sita - Complete Life Story & Divine Significance Mata Sita (also known as Janaki, Vaidehi, and Maithili) is the divine consort of Lord Ram and one of the most revered deities in Hinduism. She is the embodiment of feminine virtue, strength, and devotion. Birth of Mata Sita Sita was not born from a mother's womb but emerged from the earth. King Janak of Mithila found her while plowing the earth for a yagya. This is why she is called Janaki (daughter of Janak), and Vaidehi (from Videha kingdom). Sita Swayamvar King Janak declared that whoever could lift and string Shiva's divine bow (Pinaka) would marry Sita. When all princes failed, young Ram effortlessly lifted the bow and broke it, winning Sita's hand in marriage. Ram Sita Vivah The wedding of Ram and Sita is one of the most celebrated events in Ramayana. They were married in Mithila with great pomp and ceremony. Three brothers of Ram - Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughna - also married Sita's sisters. Vanvas (Forest Exile) When Ram went into 14-year exile, Sita insisted on accompanying him. She chose love and duty over comfort, becoming a symbol of ideal wifehood (pativrata). Sita Haran (Abduction) Ravan, the demon king of Lanka, was attracted by Sita's beauty. He sent Maricha as a golden deer to lure Ram away and abducted Sita while Lakshman was absent. Jatayu, the divine eagle, tried to stop Ravan but was mortally wounded. Lanka Captivity In Lanka, Ravan kept Sita in the Ashoka Vatika. Despite all his temptations and threats, Sita remained steadfast in her devotion to Ram. Agni Pariksha After Ram killed Ravan and rescued Sita, she underwent the Agni Pariksha (fire test) to prove her purity. The fire god Agni protected Sita and presented her as pure to Ram. Return to Ayodhya Ram, Sita, and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya in the Pushpak Viman (divine aircraft). The entire Ayodhya was decorated and lit with lamps - this celebration became Diwali.
